Introduction
Sennheiser announced the Momentum True Wireless 5 on 20 August 2026, and the headline feature isn't the sound. It's a screwdriver. The lithium cells in both earbuds and in the charging case are user-replaceable, with the tool included in the box, so the set doesn't become landfill the day the battery stops holding a charge.
That's a genuinely awkward thing to engineer. "Balancing compact size, our signature high-fidelity acoustics, and a replaceable battery is a major breakthrough," says Lilika Beck, President of Sennheiser Consumer Hearing. Frank Foppe, the product manager, frames the rest of the brief more simply: "We set out to bring the larger-than-life sound and connected technology of the MOMENTUM series into a remarkably compact format."
The rest reads like a proper flagship. The 7 mm TrueResponse dynamic driver is built and tested at Sennheiser's plant in Tullamore, Ireland. Bluetooth 6.0 carries aptX Adaptive and aptX Lossless with Snapdragon Sound, up to 24-bit/96 kHz. The shape has changed too: no fins, a rounder oval body that sits flatter in the ear, and a redesigned nozzle that seals better while pressing less. Sennheiser says 73% of its testers rated the fit more comfortable than the previous generation.

These earbuds only broke cover a few days ago, so what follows is launch coverage rather than long-term testing, but the read is consistent: the battery is the story.

The open question is noise cancelling. The Momentum True Wireless 4 was a five-star listen whose ANC still sat a step behind Sony and Bose, and Sennheiser has rebuilt the hybrid system, the tips and the mic array to close that gap. Nobody has measured it independently yet.

Final Thoughts
Every flagship earbud launch promises better ANC and cleaner calls, and most deliver a version of both. Almost none of them let you keep the thing alive past the battery's second birthday. The Momentum True Wireless 5 does, at €299, without stripping out the codecs or the spatial audio to make room for the service hatch. If it lands the noise cancelling as well, Bose and Sony have a real problem in September.
