Kanto Audio builds the pieces of a small hi-fi to work with each other, and this set is the proof: the TUK G2 powered speakers with their AMT tweeter and built-in phono stage, the OBI3 Gen 2 belt-drive turntable with speed sensor and auto-stop, and the SX 22 floor stands that put the TUK at listening height. Turntable into speakers, speakers onto stands, done.

A Kanto turntable with its own phono preamp, AMT-loaded active speakers and the steel stands that hold them at ear height.

The TUK G2 has no phono input, and it does not need one here: the OBI3 Gen 2 carries a switchable phono preamp, so one RCA cable between the two is the whole signal chain. The speakers supply the amplification, the DAC and the Bluetooth, and the SX 22 stands lift them to 55.9 cm and can be filled for mass. It is a full analogue system for a living room, with nothing left to specify.

The turntable

Kanto Audio OBI3 Gen 2

A belt-drive deck with a platter speed sensor that measures rotation and corrects it as the record plays, plus an auto-stop that halts the platter at the end of a side. An Audio-Technica AT3600L is fitted and aligned at the factory, and the switchable phono preamp means it can feed a line input directly. Bluetooth 5.3 is there when the cable is not.

Kanto Audio TUK G2

The second-generation TUK pairs a 28 x 35 mm AMT tweeter with a 5.25-inch aluminium Aircomb woofer and 130 W RMS of Class D power with DSP. Everything an amplifier and DAC would do happens inside the active cabinet, so a source, a power cable and one input is the entire system. A selectable 80 Hz crossover lets the pair hand the low end to a subwoofer later.

The stands

Kanto Audio SX 22

Heavy-gauge steel stands at 22 inches, which puts a TUK G2 tweeter close to seated ear height. The column is hollow and comes with fill bags, so mass can be added where the room needs it, and a dedicated channel takes the mains and link cables down through the base. Two top plate widths are supplied, along with spikes and silicone discs for either floor type.

Setting it up

  1. Assemble the SX 22 stands, fit the top plate that matches the TUK G2 footprint, and fill the columns if the floor is bouncy.
  2. Set the OBI3 Gen 2 on a level surface away from the speakers, fit the platter, belt and slip mat, and remove the stylus guard.
  3. Switch the OBI3 Gen 2 output to line so the built-in phono preamp is active, then run RCA from the deck to a TUK G2 line input.
  4. Join the two speakers with the supplied speaker wire, route the cables down the stand columns and connect mains power.
  5. Select the input on the remote, set the volume low and cue the record with the lever.

Questions

Does the TUK G2 have a phono input?

No. Its two RCA inputs are line level only, which is why the OBI3 Gen 2 in this set has its own switchable phono preamp.

Do I need an amplifier?

No. The TUK G2 is active, with 130 W RMS of Class D power and DSP inside the cabinet.

Which cable connects the deck to the speakers?

A standard RCA-to-RCA cable, supplied with the OBI3 Gen 2, from the deck's output set to line into either TUK G2 RCA input.

Can I play records wirelessly?

Yes. The OBI3 Gen 2 transmits over Bluetooth 5.3 and the TUK G2 receives over Bluetooth 5.4, although a cable keeps the signal path shorter.

Will the stands hold the speakers?

Comfortably. Each SX 22 is rated to 30 lb (13.6 kg) and an active TUK G2 weighs 5.6 kg.

Does the OBI3 Gen 2 play 78s?

No. It runs 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with plus or minus 10% pitch adjustment.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. The TUK G2 has a subwoofer output and a selectable 80 Hz crossover, so the mains can be relieved of the deepest bass.

What warranty does Kanto give?

Kanto's limited warranty runs 24 months from the date of shipment, with proof of purchase from an authorised reseller.
